Walter Streich

It is with a profound sense of loss that I announce the death of my beloved husband, proud father of Robert and Randolph, loving grandfather of Chloe and Cassie. For him, family always came first. Walter was pre-deceased by his mother Else, birth father Emil, and adoptive father Adolph, held in esteem by his sisters Erika Huber (Joe), Helga Schweymaier (Walter), sisters-in-law Marie Hunt (Scott), Heidi Kristensen (Ole), brother-in-law Rainer Kunau (Pat) and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

How do you capture the essence of a good man? His European charm, quiet dignity, and thoughtful ways brought him the respect of all who knew him. Always a hard worker, as a teacher and around his loving home, Walter could be found busy with one of his many projects; be it building a tree/bird house, clearing a trail for cross country skiing, or maintaining the road with his tractor. Leading by example he instilled this work ethic in his sons. During his rambles around the property he sang, hummed or whistled a tune. He always had a dog by his side; lately his devoted German shepherd, Lucky.

He cared about people, especially his students at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School. He sought to add beauty to his surroundings, which he always referred to as, "God's Country", where he planted acres of trees, kept multiple flower gardens, and was known for his green thumb. One of his many joys, as the man behind the camera, Walter collected years of family memories and spectacular photos of far away places and the interesting people we met along the way.

During the recently encountered health problems, he was capably looked after by many caregivers, in and out of hospital, and quickly became their favourite patient. He appreciated the community support, especially the local Lion's Club.

As an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Magnetawan; family, faith, love, music and travel were his keys to a happy life.

The family will receive visitors at the Opatovsky Funeral Home - Moore Chapel, 9 Paget Street in Sundridge on Sunday September 2, 2018 from 7 P.M - 9 P.M.
